Masoor dal is a traditional Indian dish also known as red lentils and is an age-old recipe that fulfils many nutritional requirements in a single meal. It is power-packed with dietary fibre and protein and it is super easy to make.

Ingredients

  • Lentil Mixture
  • 1 cup red split lentils
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 star anise
  • ½ inch fresh ginger, peeled & grated
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp salt or to taste
  • Seasoning
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • ¼ tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 dried whole red chillies
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • A few stems of coriander, to serve
  • Salt, to taste

Method


  • Place all the lentil ingredients in a saucepan or pressure cooker and cook until soft.
  • To make the seasoning, in a wok or saucepan, sauté the onion, garlic, cumin seeds and whole chillies.
  • Add the tomato and turmeric, stir and mash with a wooden spoon and cook until it's a paste.
  • To serve, add the cooked lentils to the tomato mixture and stir. Add salt to taste. Serve with coriander sprigs.
