Beautiful shells

Beautiful inside and out

While ordering a coffee in beachside Victor Harbor I became taken with a beautiful scallop shell. “Such a lovely shell,” I said as I held it in my hand.

“You can keep it,” the barrista said.

So I did.

How can this beauty form so delightfully — deep under our ocean while everything else goes on around the world?

On the outside the shell is beautifully glossy. Swirls of different shades of brown. Light to dark and almost reddish arcs form rainbows — each line a memory of the life and the environment affecting how the scallop grew. There are pictures of shells upon the shell. A perfectly formed light cream-coloured shell is incredulously patterned like a doorway or a fan. Another stunning portrait Mother Nature paints with ease and precision like so many patterned creatures on our Earth.

But there are also cracks. And chips around the edges. There are black marks not obviously part of the shell’s balanced pattern.

And yet…did you notice the beauty first or the scars?

Do the cracks, chips and black marks detract from the wholeness of the shell?

On the inside a glossy whitish gleam of perfection. Balanced ridges or energy patterns not noticeable on the outside. No cracks are visible. No chips appear obviously around the edges — the shape looks like it’s supposed to be that way. There are no black marks.

Do you see the outside on the inside?

Or do you see the inside on the outside?

We each have a shell — an outer image or shield of protection. Created by our universe it will always be incredulously beautiful and miraculous. Our outer shell may be worn; show some scars and a timeline of the environment we grew up in…

…so just remember the inside.
