Phenylketonuria
Phenylketonuria is a condition caused by a deficiency of an enzyme required for processing the essential amino acid phenylalanine. The build up of phenylalanine in the body over time can cause a variety of symptoms (see below). If untreated, phenylketonuria can cause severe neurological symptoms such as seizures, hyperactivity, clumsy walking, unusual posture and aggressive behaviour.
Symptoms in adults: organ damage, mental retardation and abnormal posture.
Symptoms in infants: laziness, lethargy, light eyes, difficulty feeding and skin rash.
