Nickel is a silver-white trace metal that is found within many cells in the body. Trace amounts of nickel are essential for biochemical reactions such as DNA stabilisation, hormonal function and enzyme activation.
Sources of exposure: exhaust fumes from cars, cigarette smoke, airborne dust, coins, hairpins, jewellery, heart valves, prosthetic joints and nickel plating. Nickel is also contained in many agricultural and food products.
Symptoms: nausea, dizziness, diarrhoea, headache, vomiting, dermatitis, chest pain, respiratory illness, thyroid malfunction, heart attack and coughing.
