Circulatory problems
Circulatory problems arise when there is a restriction in the normal circulation of blood and lymphatics in the body. If a clot formed in a larger vein, lodges in a pulmonary artery, it can cause a pulmonary embolus – a condition associated with a sudden shortness of breath. Buerger’s disease is a circulatory condition common in people that smoke, which involves the inflammation of blood vessels in the extremities. Raynaud’s disease is characterised by the spasm of blood vessels in the extremities. Raynaud’s disease can result in dry gangrene, if tissue dies due to a lack of circulation. Marfan’s syndrome, a rare hereditary condition can also cause circulation issues, as can varicose veins.
Symptoms of Buerger’s disease: tingling and burning sensation in the fingers and toes, ulceration and eventually gangrene.
Symptoms of Raynaud’s disease: numbness, coldness and a change in colour (bluish tinge) to the extremities.
