Carpal tunnel syndrome
CTS is classed as a repetitive strain injury and it occurs when the median nerve, which travels through the carpal tunnel at the wrist, is compressed.
Causes: swelling, pregnancy, water retention, menopause, obesity, pressure from bone spurs, diabetes, arthritis, tendonitis, occupational overuse (e.g. keyboards, jackhammers) and hypothyroidism.
Symptoms: numbness, weakness and motor losses in the areas innervated by the median nerve, which include the palmar aspect of the first three and a half fingers (thumb to ring finger) and several muscles in the forearm and palm.
