Acne
Acne is in an inflammatory skin condition characterised by pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. Acne usually arises in puberty when there is increased production of male hormones called androgens that stimulate sebum (an oily lubricant). Excessive sebum production can make pores sticky, allowing bacteria to be enmeshed inside and flourish, causing a blemish.
Contributing factors: heredity, oily skin, hormonal imbalance, menstrual cycle, candidiasis and the oral contraceptive.
Who to consult: Dermatologist, dietician, GP, herbalist, pharmacist or psychologist.
