Skin Saviours

Sonya Driver, founder of Eco Tan, shares her top tips for finding the right routine for different skin concerns.

The most important thing for all skin concerns is to do no harm. Our skin is our largest organ and much of what you put on it can be absorbed into your bloodstream.

When I’m formulating my organics, the one thing I always add is natural active ingredients. For example, vitamin C at the right dosage and type brightens and targets pigmentation, evens skin tone and boosts collagen production. It’s truly a phenomenal ingredient.

Oily, acne-prone skin concerns

My heart really goes out to those who suff er from acne as I did from my teens to my 20s. It can really be a blow to your self-confi dence and self-esteem. To those people, I say, keep it simple:

  • Double cleanse with a gel or foam cleanser (not a cream cleanser). You need to deeply clean the skin without harsh ingredients that strip and irritate it and you don’t want to leave a residue that will block your pores.
  • For acne-prone skin, we always feel the urge to over-exfoliate but try your best not to do this. With clean hands, use an (not cream-based or sugar-based) exfoliant on slightly damp skin. In circular motions, massage gently to clean pores and remove dead skin layers. Our Super Acai Exfoliator is perfect for this, once or twice a week.
  • Now it’s time for a serum. You want the serum to be active, so it gets results fast. Our Serum of Clear is made from salicylic acid, lactic acid (10 per cent) and liquorice root. It will help remove dead skin layers, clean pores, help control oil production and soothe irritated skin with antiinflammatory properties. It will sting a little but that’s how you know it’s doing its job.
  • Even oily skin needs hydration. Look for a moisturiser that is lightweight, oil free and that will offer a calming, hydrating effect on the skin without blocking the pores.

Dry/rosacea/irritated skin

People who suff er from rosacea frequently contact me. If you can only afford two products, here is a combo that will dramatically change the appearance of rosacea:

  • Our organic Face Tan Water will reduce the appearance of redness, while soothing the irritation with calming ingredients such aloe vera and hyaluronic acid.
  • Glory Oil will soothe the skin and give it a moisture boost. It is a must for all ages and especially those struggling with rosacea. The magnificent blend of cold-pressed super seed oils assists in calming red, dry skin to nourish and restore skin without being greasy or heavy.

Maturing Skin

Mature skin really needs refi ning and promotion of collagen and cell turnover. In other words, fresh new skin. So don’t be afraid to exfoliate:

  • I use a physical exfoliant once a week. You want to resurface your skin and add deep moisture at the same time. Removing dead skin layers is the first step for mature skin so you can put your active serums on, and they will absorb deeply.
  • I’m almost in my 60s and I still use Serum of Clear everyday, which powerfully refi nes.
  • Lastly, add some deep moisture such as Glory Oil and, of course, good-quality sunscreen.
