EMFs (electromagnetic fields) – understanding them and your health

EMFS or electromagnetic fields consist of electric, magnetic and radio frequency fields. EMFs have shown that they can cause biological damage to the human body. There are different types of electromagnetic fields, which can all be linked by their common biological action. The different types include low frequency, high frequency, microwaves, magnetic and electric fields. The reason these can have similar effects are because an electrical field and magnetic field have similar affects in a cell. Also, higher frequency signals have enough low-frequency components to have a lot in common with low-frequency components which means they reflect off each other and can even magnify each other sometimes.

Health Effects

There has been a lot of controversy about the effects of EMFs over the years and in many ways it has divided our communities in what they choose to believe. EMF’s don’t create heat, this means that thermal effects have nothing to do with the damage EMF’s can cause. There has been research done that does show that there can be biological effects though at both high and low frequencies. There are substantial health issues that many of us have been experiencing for a long time. Research done by Paul Heroux, a physicist, has shown that small levels of only 60 Hertz of magnetic fields have substantial effects on cancer cells in test culture. It also showed in his tests that it may be able to suppress metabolism.

There is some evidence that levels at or above 160NT (nanotesla) may affect male fertility and lower sperm production. Also, if exposed while pregnant it could possibly increase the risk of miscarriage in woman. So even back when Heroux was doing his studies in 1973 there were suspicions that EMFs did not have a good effect on the human body. Nevertheless we live in a society where we are surrounded by EMFs and how they affect you and your lifestyle depends to some extent on which Science you choose to believe due to the conflicting and ever changing information.

Why do EMFs affect us?

It can be difficult to avoid these fields because they are around us everywhere we go. Just living in a home with electricity exposes you to them. There has been research done showing the differences between disease prevalence in rural populations that were not electrified and urban electrified living. The urban results are significantly higher than those in the rural areas but what does this mean?

Heroux research worked with the enzyme ATP synthase which is involved in the production of energy that a cell uses called ATP (Adenosine tri-phosphate).  If a cell needs to spend energy to do a task the ATP molecule splits off to become ADP (Adenosine di-phosphate). Then, this ADP can be used again and be transformed into ATP thanks to the enzymes creating a cycle. Magnetic fields reduce the flow of protons used to produce energy so the levels of energy in a cell decrease. Your cells then have less energy and this can affect you. Heroux’s research says it can lead to chronic disease, infertility and even cause a lower intelligence.

Other research over the years points to how EMFs have led to oxidative stress which creates a cycle with inflammation in the body affecting our immunity. Lowered immunity of course leads to many illnesses. Add to this the effects of free radicals on health and there is a recipe going on in the body for many major illnesses to occur.

Over the years researchers in this area have found that EMF damage can be extensive and they have claimed that it can affect rates of everything from cancer to leukaemia. This is why there is so much in the news about staying away from your cell phone, overwork on screens, microwaved food etc. This has led to a split between scientists and their beliefs confusing the general public.

Avoiding these fields

If you have medically unexplained illnesses or generally feel bad you can start to look in the areas of how much exposure you have to EMFs. There may be other causes but unfortunately you will need to go through a process of elimination. Remember to also check out the many other toxins around you in our environment including the types of food you put into your body. There are many toxins around us that could be said to be killing us https://www.wellbeing.com.au/body/health/toxins-killing-us.html

You can buy an EMF tester to see how much of an EMF field is in your space at home or work. Believers in the effects of EMF fields advise not to have your bed on a wall where the electricity box is behind your bed. Remember electricity and magnetic fields cannot be seen. This does not mean they don’t affect us.

When I bought an EMF tester I was quite surprised at the high alarm sound it made on my mobile phone and when I took it into a room where I have an EMF cleanser the sound altered considerably. This is quite a simple test I did but told me a lot about the EMF blocker I had bought. There are many other things you can do to block EMFs in your space. Everything from having someone come and do an analysis of your home/office to buying a special paint you can put on the wall underneath the colour normal paint you want in the room. There are also devices you can buy to wear and put on your phone etc. How effective these are is something that you need to research because seeing is believing.

We live in a multi-faceted world with many things to affect us in negative ways. Hiding under a rock so to speak is not the solution. Be informed, investigate, decide what is right for you and act upon it. The key word here is balance. Balance for your energetic, spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health. Not always and easy task but certainly a worthwhile one.
