Surya namaskara is a sequence of yoga asanas, better known as the salute to the sun. In virtually any yoga class you attend you can be assured you will practise surya namaskara or at least some of its core postures.
Yoga is great for cultivating arm strength. Many women, myself included, feel their strength is somewhat lacking when it comes to the arms. Yoga offers a way to gradually build up that strength. Although many of the yoga positions that are arm intensive may seem physically challenging at first, it’s important to stick with them. Even if you can only hold the pose for a few seconds, it’s a start. Practise will help you progress and gradually cultivate strength and endurance.

If you’ve practised yoga on and off, want to get more into your practice, are a newcomer or just want to know what all the fuss is about, here’s you chance. Yoga places great focus on the abdominal and core strength. However, there’s more to this than just achieving perfectly toned six pack. Your abdominals are literally your core – your centre – so it’s essential we keep this area strong.
I love music. During my own yoga practice I’ll always have my iPod on in the background shuffling between Led Zeppelin songs with 10 minute guitar solos, early 90s gangster rap and pop tunes that I’m too utterly embarrassed to name.
Yoga is a gentle way to help strengthen the body especially if you are suffer from back pain. Many yoga asanas focus on the spine and postural alignment. Many postures work to improve spinal strength and flexibility, making yoga perfect for back pain.
As a recently certified yoga teacher, I’ve been thinking about what’s important in a yoga class. As a teacher, I think it’s important to understanding why your students are attending your class and what they want to get out of your class. All of this made me think about the varied reasons we do yoga.
Have you ever aimlessly looked into the distance and it’s not until someone actually calls your name a few times that you realise you were even in this “stare mode” ? Sometimes when we stare or gaze at something we are so focused that we withdraw from the external environment but without really realising it. […]
This post is either going to disgust or intrigue you or possibly both. I mentioned last week that at the ashram, we underwent yogic cleansing techniques. The first was jala neti and the second was the slightly more unconventional, vaman dhauti. So what is vaman? Vaman must be performed the first thing in the morning […]
According to Hatha Yoga there are six Shatkarmas, also known as cleansing techniques. The Shatkarmas activate, cleanse and purify the body’s system allowing prana to flow freely and ultimately help one achieve a deeper yogic state. The six shatkarmas involve a range of techniques that focus on different aspects of the body such as the […]
