Yoga soothes your heart

We tend to take for granted the capacity of our hearts to produce a regular beat to pump life sustaining blood around our bodies. Yet it is not uncommon for that beating to become irregular which is why it is good news that a new study has shown that regular yoga can regulate an irregular heartbeat.

Your heart has four chambers. The two upper chambers are called the left atrium and the right atrium. The bottom two are called the left ventricle and the right ventricle. The atria fill with blood and then allow that blood through to the ventricles which contract and sqeeze blood into the circulation. This can go wrong though if you have a condition called atrial fibrillation.

In atrial fibrillation the atria are not synchronised with the contractions of the ventricles due to unusual generation of electrical signals in the heart. The heart beats too rapidly and not very effectively and blood starts to accumulate in the atria. This means there is an increased risk of clots forming and these can in turn cause strokes.

Now it seems that yoga may be a low cost treatment for those suffering atrial fibrillation.

In a new study people with atrial fibrillation were allowed to choose any exercise that they wanted for a three month period. Then for the next three month period they all had three yoga sessions per week with an instructor. They were also encouraged to do yoga at home on other days.

All of the subjects had their heart rhythms monitored regularly over the six months of the study.

In the end, regular yoga reduced episodes of atrial fibrillation by around 50 per cent. Additionally symptoms of depression and anxiety were reduced by yoga while general health improved.

The researchers concluded that yoga would be a worthwhile part of treatment for anyone with heart rhythm problems.
