Tai Chi and Green Tea

Inflammation is being increasingly understood as one of the mechanisms that underlies many modern ailments and is also thought to be one of the drivers of the ageing process. One of the other major health concerns as you age is the density of your bones. Now it seems that a combination of Green Tea and Tai Chi are an answer to both of these problems and therefore may have an anti-ageing effect.

Green tea is an excellent source of polyphenols which offer a range of health promoting effects. Tai Chi is a martial art that features gentle, slow, and controlled movements combined with meditation. Tai Chi has also been shown in studies to have a range of health benefits. In a new study it seems that Tai Chi and Green Tea also have some kind of synergy.

For the research post-menopausal women who had decreased bone density but not yet fully developed osteoporosis were assigned to one of four groups; a placebo pill and no Tai Chi, Green Tea polyphenols in a pill and no Tai Chi, a placebo pill and Tai Chi, or Green Tea polyphenols in a pill and Tai Chi. The amount of Green Tea polyphenols was equivalent to four to six cups of Green Tea per day.

After three to six months both Green Tea and Tai Chi when used independently of each other improved bone density. In both of these groups muscle strength was also improved by the six month point. Tai Chi participants also reported improvements in quality of life on an emotional level. When Green Tea and Tai Chi combined there was also an additional reduction in inflammation.

It might not be the fountain of youth, but for ageing women it seems that a combination of Green Tea and Tai Chi will be a very healthy option.
