Feet beat shoes

If you judge by dollars paid running shoes must confer huge benefits for your body. Not so, according to new research. Subjects were given a new pair of running shoes and asked to run on a treadmill. Researchers then had them run barefoot and compared the body impacts using joint torque which is a measure of the twisting that goes on in a joint. They found that running shoes led to 54 per cent more internal hip rotation, 36 per cent more knee flexion, and 38 per cent more knee varus (inward bending) than running barefoot. So while running shoes do protect feet quite well they increase stress on hips, knees and ankles. Interestingly, a 36 to 38 per cent increase in torque on knee joints is greater than the 20-26 per cent increase caused by high-heeled shoes.
