Chocolate Beetroot Juice heals hearts

Two separate new studies have found that beetroot juice and chocolate work in the same way to reduce blood pressure. The first study on beetroot juice compared people with high blood pressure who drank 250ml of beetroot juice to those who took nitrate tablets. The researchers found that within 24 hours both groups had significant reductions in blood pressure. This suggests that it is the nitrate in beetroot juice that is producing the blood pressure lowering effect. Nitrate increases the levels of the gas nitric oxide in circulation and this in turn keeps blood vessels open (dilates them) which reduces blood pressure. The fact that only 250ml of the juice is needed to achieve the effect suggests that beetroot juice can be a first step natural approach to lowering blood pressure. Similarly, another piece of research has suggested that chocolate also acts to lower blood pressure by increasing nitric oxide levels. Researchers from the University of Adelaide analysed the results from fifteen studies into the effect of flavanols from chocolate on blood pressure. They found that the flavanols cause the blood vessel lining to form nitric oxide which in turn causes the blood vessels to open and blood pressure to drop. However, this was only true for people with high blood pressure but not those with normal blood pressure. The pressure reduction achieved by chocolate flavanols was only slight but it still equated to about 30 minutes of moderate exercise and would reduce the risk of a cardiac event by twenty per cent over a five year period. The researchers did say that the other ingredients in commercial chocolate would raise questions about its use as a long-term treatment.
