Bird flu lingers

Bird flu (avian influenza) is an H5N1 form of the influenza virus that mainly infects birds, including chickens, ducks and turkeys. Human cases are becoming more common and there are fears that future mutations could help the virus more readily spread from person to person, possibly leading to a pandemic. When birds on a farm come down with the disease, farmers usually kill the entire flock because that is the only known way to subdue an outbreak. So far, hundreds of millions of birds have been killed around the world by the flu or by efforts to control it. When the birds have been placed into landfills, researchers found that at colder temperatures and neutral pH (acidity) levels, the virus could survive for up to two years. The chances of the virus spreading from a landfill remain slim, but the results suggest waste managers need to be particularly careful with how they dispose and manage landfills containing infected birds.
