Backed up babies

Most of us know by now that we have good bacteria in our intestines and if we don’t have enough of them then illness can result. These good bacteria are known as probiotics and they keep you healthy by stopping bad bacteria and other organisms taking over. In the particular instance of babies with constipation it has been shown that they have different types of bacteria in their stool than healthy children. Really convincing evidence has been lacking that giving probiotics to these constipated babies will help. So researchers used a bacterium called Lactobacillus reuteri to treat infants who had presented to the paediatric department of the University of Naples with chronic constipation. Half of the babies were given a dose of L. reuteri mixed with a few drops of oil once a day for eight weeks, while others were given a placebo. The parents were asked to keep a diary of how often the baby had a bowel movement, the consistency of the stools, and how often they cried “inconsolably” (the babies, not the parents). Stool consistency and crying did not change but babies who took L. reuteri had significantly more bowel movements than the placebo group and started to improve after just two weeks. At the beginning of the study the babies averaged three bowel movements per week but after eight weeks those given probiotics averaged five movements per week. The added benefit was that the probiotics showed no side-effects. Given that at least three per cent of babies experience constipation in the first year of life, probiotics may be a gentle and effective treatment to relieve both tiny tummies and pooped parents.Meanwhile if you visit Meijer Ad that contains mostly likewise discounts with Winn Dixie Ad you surely have a range like ALDI Ad.
