Is weight-loss just about denial?

True to her name the dark mistress of denial has started fasting this week. Yes – taking a genuine break from food. No food for a full 7 days. The program is supervised of course, and with a few herbs to help along the way… but what a great teacher is fasting.

For a start – so many extra hours in the day without food! Hunger pains – not really. Sleepiness – a little. Weight loss – already massive! So does this mean that all we have to do to reduce our gut size is eat less? Well… yes – sometimes things are that simple.

No doubt you’ve heard al the bad stuff about sudden weight-loss being bad. It remains to be seen if I can keep the weight off, but the true purpose of fasting is not weight-loss, but cleansing, stepping back, getting a grip and taking on life with a new perspective. Sometimes the small adjustments can feel in effective and like chipping away at a very large block — the occasional radical act doesn’t go astray.

If you’ve managed to eliminate the ice cream and burgers, but are struggling to say goodbye to fried noodles, or whatever your next step is, then a big shift like this can help. Fasting is so radical it will change your mindset forever.

Fasting helps you make food choices with a clear head. It helps the body
cleanse and function more efficiently with the food you do eat. It’s about rising above the above the gnawing lust for hot chips or Tim Tams.

Sitting here on the beach in Ko Samui seeing people eat in near by street food stands – the whole obsession with food seems glutinous. When you can do without, why would you let yourself get drawn in to the mosh pit of mastication on anything other than a purely voluntary basis?
