The yoga

Byron Yoga Retreat Centre is the home of Byron Yoga Centre. Founded more than 30 years ago by John Ogilvie, it has grown into Australia’s pre-eminent yoga teacher-training academy and retreat centre. Ogilvie developed the style of purna yoga, combining his many years of experience to create this classical alignment-focused variation of hatha yoga with intelligent sequencing. Purna, meaning integrated or complete in Sanskrit, represents the holistic approach to yoga — integrating the physical postures with philosophy, meditation and pranayama. This accessible and comprehensive style is suitable for beginners to more experienced students as variations are given for all levels. For some guests, the retreat is an introduction to starting yoga for the first time. Retreat programs include morning flow classes, purna yoga sessions and yin and restorative classes. All sessions are optional.

Wellbeing programs

Retreats at Byron Yoga Retreat Centre are designed to give you space to relax and recharge and to increase your sense of wellbeing. Choose a signature eight-, five- or three-day all-inclusive retreat or perhaps join a Women’s Health Retreat or a Surf and Yoga Weekend. Nourish your body and spirit with a combination of yoga and meditation classes, massage treatments, holistic wellness sessions and fresh, organic, vegetarian meals.

The wellness sessions

Key features of the programs are the morning and evening wellness sessions. These include nutrition and cooking classes, yogic philosophy, guided meditations and workshops on the principles of alignment in yoga poses and the fundamentals of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science developed to achieve optimum health. To gain maximum benefits, it is recommended to sign up for the eight-day retreat. However, both the five- and three-day options offer a selection of these sessions and all retreats provide guests with the essential ongoing wellness advice to enable you to continue your wellbeing journey when you return Home.

The food

Prepared using the freshest ingredients, with much of the produce from the on-site organic gardens, meals at the Byron Yoga Retreat Centre follow the principles of SLOW food: Seasonal, Local, Organic and Without processed foods of any kind. Produce either comes from the organic gardens or is sourced where possible from local, organic suppliers. The meals are not only good for you, free of toxins and naturally detoxing, but they also taste amazing.

Retreat guests are offered a fresh juice in the morning break and coffee, chai, cold drinks and sugar-free sweet treats are available for purchase. There are gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free dining options available and allergies can be catered for. Meals are vegetarian (eggs available at breakfast) and, as well as following the principles of SLOW, menus are prepared according to Ayurvedic sattvic principles to promote healing and to lighten the body, mind and spirit.
