Dating

The date or the hook?

“Dating” is the interaction between two people who go out together to get to know each other with the prospect of a future relationship. “Hooking up” is a casual encounter involving kissing or sex with no commitment to a future relationship. For this study a group of men and women were asked to list the top three benefits and risks for dating and hooking up. Both genders showed a preference for dating over hooking up but twice as many women than men “strongly” preferred dating. Of those who strongly preferred hooking up however, there were eight times more men than women. There was general agreement on the benefits of dating and hooking up but women showed greater fear of becoming emotionally attached to someone who did not care about them while men valued independence and feared the commitment of relationships.
