Girls on film

We think of ourselves as a society in which the sexes are perceived as equal. In film the theory has been that the action character Lt. Ripley played by Sigourney Weaver in Alien paved the way for a new portrayal of women in film. To quantify this a researcher looked at the 112 highest grossing action films between 1991 and 2005. It was found that 58 per cent of female action characters played a submissive role to the male hero and 42 per cent were romantically involved with him. The average action female character was young, white, highly educated and unmarried and they engaged in masculine type violence. The research concludes that female action characters do not draw on their femininity as a source of power and instead they fit highly structured gender norms and rely on the hero.
