How to change your life & set goals that stick

Just about everyone has goals of some sort. Some of us have big goals and visions whilst others more modest. Personally I started working on myself because of my lack of goals and direction in life. I wanted to change my life but whatever I tried didn’t work and I felt very unfulfilled and empty. Subconsciously I didn’t believe in myself so it never even occurred to me to create any goals.

Over the years I’ve learnt how much is required in sustaining a goal, and the bigger the goal, the more work you have to put in to help it manifest and stay manifested. Having a goal is not enough to change your life and bring it into reality (otherwise we’d all have what we wanted on a platter from just thinking about it once). Anyone who is very successful and connected with making their goals a reality will tell you it takes constant work.

So what emotional work needs to be done to achieve this? First let me tell you about how we make things manifest into our reality. When we want or expect something in our lives, we think about it and then we begin to connect to it emotionally.

We think about what it would be like if it happened and visualize scenarios of it happening many different ways and how it would make us feel. When we have attached our emotional energy to it, it gets sent out into the cosmos and we wait for it to come back. This is called our intention.

The problem is whilst we may be consciously doing this for the good things we want to come into our lives like a new healthy relationship, a new exciting career path or an increase in self esteem, we may also be doing it subconsciously about the bad things that we expect to happen such as a deep unconscious belief in always attracting the same type of relationship, thinking about previous failed career goals or remembering the lowest points in our self esteem and self worth.

So if our negative intention (our intention linked with negative emotion) is bigger and has more energy than our positive intention, they either cancel each other out or the negative intention overrides the positive and we start attracting negative events and people into our reality that match our intentions and usually worst fears (and funnily enough we are not usually that surprised when they show up as we expected them all along).

Often negative intentions have more energy simply because they are unconscious and they come from distorted beliefs formed in childhood mostly under the age of 7. If you’ve talked to a 7 year old lately you’d known how different their thinking is to that of an adult and how they could easily make wrong conclusions about life and themselves based on what’s happening to them right now.

When I work with people I am always looking for the ways the personality and these unconscious beliefs are trying to undermine them and how their defense is working in a contradictory way to their highest intentions and goals. No one sabotages their goals intentionally but it takes work to figure out why it is happening.

Having these positive intentions is the first step and the easy part. The more challenging part is finding your contradicting intentions that will pull you down. Once you uncover these negative intentions, the sky is literally the limit.
