Wrinkles are lines formed in skin that has lost elasticity. Wrinkles are a normal part of the aging process. As skin cells age, there are less antioxidants available and the free radicals generated are able to breakdown collagen, a protein found in connective tissue, under the skin. This is a key event in the formation of wrinkles in the aged. Wrinkles usually first appear in the corner of the eye, followed by the cheeks and lips. The drying and thinning of skin also contributes to wrinkle formation. Sun exposure is an important contributing factor as it dries out the skin and aids the development of free radicals. The effects of sun exposure exist without sun tanning, and they are cumulative.
Contributing factors: aging, diet and nutrition, muscle tone, facial expression, stress, improper skin care, environmental pollutants, heredity, sun exposure and smoking.
