The common cold can be caused by up to 200 viruses that infect the upper respiratory tract. The most common of these viruses is the rhinoviruses. A cold usually appears less than 24 hours after infection with the virus and it typically runs it course for 7 to 10 days. If a cold does not resolve, it can lead to bronchitis, middle ear infection or sinus infection.
