Tell us about the Lotus Dental Story

Lotus Dental was established in 2006 By Dr Prue King. She had a vision and passion for providing patients with dentistry, keeping the whole body in mind. In 2010 Dr Urvashi Pandey joined the practice. She also shared the same vision, and together as business partners sharing similar values of Holistic, integrative dentistry, both Dr King and Dr Pandey grew the practice. They sold the practice to Maven dental in 2018.  We now have an awesome team of a total of 4 dentists, one oral health therapist and two hygienists and oral myologists led by  – Dr King and Dr Pandey.

If a reader has never heard of Lotus Dental, how would you describe it?

Lotus dental is an Integrative Holistic dental practice where the emphasis is on treating the mouth and teeth but also keeping in mind the rest of the human being attached to the teeth. Understanding the effects of posture and breathing on teeth and Jaw development and sleep. Using biocompatible materials, understanding that the oral microbiome reflects the gut microbiome and how it all ties in the person’s overall health. It uses modern technology but focuses on minimal intervention and prevention. Our dentists and other practitioners are very conscious about using biocompatible materials and preserving patients’ tooth structure as much as possible. Emphasis is also on Nutrition and the patient’s diet and correcting oral hygiene habits.

Our job as holistic dentists is to educate and empower our patients. When they understand the mouth-body connection, they incorporate daily practices and make positive lifestyle changes.

What sets Lotus Dental apart from others?

Understanding that mouth breathing, tongue ties, and incorrect tongue and lip posture in children are responsible for most of them needing braces. These habits must be identified and treated at an early age. for example- if a patient has a narrow airway with or without nasal blockage, it could be contributing to sleep apnea, or if a patient is severely tongue-tied or a mouth breather, they would most likely have narrow jaws and crowded teeth, needing an orthodontic intervention. Holistic dentistry is all about treating the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms; for example, if a patient is clenching or grinding their teeth in their sleep (bruxism), just making an oral splint or a night guard is not enough. Finding out the root cause and treating it is important. Sleep history and airway examination are extremely important. This knowledge can be life-changing for patients.
